First and foremost we have to pay homage to all the great women that have been leaders and ground breakers in the industry; from writers, MCs, producers, stylists and many more. They opened up a brand new chapter in an industry dominated by men. As well as an industry that looked down to women and their achievements. EPWorldwide.com salutes you all!!! Now, out with the old and in with the new. Here are some of our pick for the Best Female Rappers Alive (New Skool).

Kid Sister

Melisa Young aka Kid Sister from Markham, Illinois. Kid Sister had a hard life growing up in South suburban Chicago due to her parents' financial circumstances during the 1980s and '90's. Kid Sister started rapping in October 2005, becoming an MC at monthly dance parties hosted by DJ duo Flosstradamus (she is the elder sister of one half of the duo, Josh "J2K" Young), which led to being featured in MTV's My Block that same year. She made URB's "The Next 1000" cover in April 2007, and was signed to Kanye West's DJ A-Trak's label, Fool's Gold, who released her first single "Pro Nails", which features Kanye West. Kid Sister later signed with Downtown Records, who re-released "Pro Nails" to critical acclaim.

Trina

Miami-based rapper Trina first gained notoriety in 1998 with her appearance on Trick Daddy's www.thug.com album. Her own debut album, Da Baddest Bitch, featured a cameo by Trick Daddy and was released in early 2000 on Atlantic Records. She spent the next two years honing her raw, raunchy style. She paired up with Missy Elliott for the recording of her second effort, 2002's Diamond Princess. Out of her first three albums, the star-studded, very polished 2005 effort Glamorest Life sold the worst, even with the hit single "Here We Go" featuring Kelly Rowland. No surprise, then, that her 2008 release, Still da Baddest, was a return to the rawness of her debut.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj was discovered on MySpace by Dirty Money CEO Fendi, who signed her to his Dirty Money label. After appearing on The Carter Edition of Dirty Money's The Come Up DVD series, Minaj was contacted by Lil Wayne. The two collaborated on a number of mixtape tracks. In April 2007, she released her first mixtape, Playtime Is Over, where she posed as a Barbie doll on the cover. Lil’ Wayne appeared on the track "Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop".

In 2008, Minaj released her mixtape, Sucka Free. Minaj appeared in the July issue of XXL magazine, giving a brief overview of her life up to that point in time. Later that year, Minaj won Female Artist of the Year at the Underground Music Awards.

Minaj released Beam Me Up Scotty, another mixtape, in 2009. It received generally positive coverage on the websites of both BET and MTV.

Remy Ma

Remy made her first appearances in the music industry on Big Pun's album "Yeeeah Baby" (under the name Remi Martin) on the tracks "Ms. Martin" & "You Was Wrong". After the death of Big Pun, rapper Fat Joe signed Remy to his impring labe under SRC and Universal and made her a member of Terror Squad. Following the success of Lean Back, which garnered Remy a Grammy nomination, her debut solo album, There's Something About Remy: Based on a True Story, went on to sell 150,000 units in its first year of release. With the solo albums lackluster debut, Remy decided to end her relationship with Fat Joe and the Terror Squad, breaking her deal with SRC/Universal in the process.

Remy Ma released 3 singles from her debut album There's Something About Remy. "Conceited" was the most successful, the album moved 37,000 units in its opening week and 158,000 units within the first year. The album received outstanding reviews from XXL Magazine with XL to Rollingstone and Vibe Magazine.

Lil Mama

Lil Mama has been featured in remixes of various singles including "Girlfriend" (Avril Lavigne), "Umbrella" (Rihanna), "Beautiful Girls" (Sean Kingston), "Just Fine" (Mary J. Blige),and "Block Party" (Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes). She is of African-American and Native American descent Lil Mama was nominated for Monster Single of the Year for her song "Lip Gloss" at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, but the award was given to Rihanna, for "Umbrella". She also appears as one of the judges on the MTV reality dance competition America's Best Dance Crew.

Tara Kirkland, Lil' Mama's mother, died on December 15, 2007 after a four-year battle with cancer. Lil Mama received the news while on tour and had to rush back home. The music video of "Shawty Get Loose" featuring Chris Brown and T-Pain, was dedicated to her.

Her debut album, VYP (Voice of the Young People) was released in April 2008, and debuted at #24 in the Billboard charts becoming a commercial failure, garnering sales of under 25,000 in its first week. Lil Mama was scheduled to be featured on a remix/skit version of Lil Wayne's "A Milli", but the song, ultimately, failed to make the final cut of Tha Carter III. She is also featured on Vanessa Hudgens' song, "Amazed" from her 2008 album, Identified.

Shawnna

An MC from the south side of Chicago -- and the daughter of blues guitarist Buddy Guy -- Shawnna (Rashawnna Guy) began writing rhymes while in high school. She caught her first break in 1996, when her duo Infamous Syndicate opened for Junior M.A.F.I.A. in Chicago. Infamous Syndicate signed to Relativity a year later and released Changing the Game in 1999. The album didn't live up to its title, despite production help from No ID and Kanye West; the duo was dropped and eventually split. Shawnna then hooked up with Ludacris, who granted her a spot on his break-out single "What's Your Fantasy." Two years after an album with Luda's Disturbing Tha Peace crew, she finally released Worth Tha Weight, her solo debut for Def Jam. West, Timbaland, Just Blaze, Shondrae, Icedrake, and Jermaine Dupri chipped in with production support. Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
