4.5 Stars out of 6: Above-Average Album, a good CD that while still containing a few flaws, it surprisingly has a lot of quality material and replay value.

3 Stars out of 6:
Average Album, basic run-of-the-mill CD taking little risks, typically what was expected.  Contains hits but consistency and concept are an issue here.  Has strong points and equal weaknesses; not bad, but not great either.

It seems like every 2 years or so, we see a new “American Bad Girl” in music completely take over.  Even if you sparingly turn on the radio, there’s no doubt that you’ll quickly realize that the chick ruling the airwaves now is named Ke$ha.  Let me warn you, this female has some serious past issues.  There’s industry horror-stories of her: struggling low-income childhood years with her single mother; her moonlighting as an underage teen waitress and sleeping in other people’s cars; her being so drunk at a party that she vomited in Paris Hilton’s closet; even to her being detained for trespassing inside of Prince’s Beverly Hills home (apparently wanting to give him her demo).  The good thing about being borderline crazy is that there a lot of other crazy people out there that can relate to you if given the chance.  As you may recognize her voice singing the hook on Flo-Rida’s 2009 smash hit “Right Round”, she is no stranger to radio dominance.  Still it’s her breakout single “Tik Tok” that is freakishly catchy, making it the first new #1 Billboard single of 2010.  At present time of writing this review, Ke$ha is #1 in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway, and on her way to breaking multiple downloading records, so let’s see what her debut album ANIMAL actually has to offer.
The aforementioned “Tik Tok” is a fast-paced, pop, party-starting monster, co-produced by Dr. Luke & Benny Blanco, where an excited Ke$ha jokingly raps over the beat, with and without autotune.  Conceptually the song is about having fun, acting dumb, and causing a ruckus – boosted by brazen lyrics such as: “Before I leave I brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack…”, “Ain’t got a care in the world but got plenty of beer…”, and “Everybody getting crunk-crunk/ boys trying to touch my junk/ gotta slap him if he getting too drunk”.  She’ll be following this up with her second single “Blah Blah Blah”, featuring 3Oh!3, in which follows the same made-for-radio formula of loads of zaps, synths, auto-tune, and drum machines.  The point she is so scantly trying to get across here is - if you shut up and cut to the chase, you can have sex with her; and she supports this with lines like: “don’t be a little bitch with your chit-chat/just show me where your dick’s at”.  Probably my favorite song on this CD is the rare slower, guitar-riff powered, “Dancing With Tears in My Eyes”, in which is a welcomed pause from the insanity, where Ke$ha honestly admits she has problems, parties too much, and is secretly trying to survive through this lifestyle.  Other standout tracks destined for radio include: the fast-paced, techno-inspired, “Take It Off”, that describes wild dancing, drunk-dialing, and a crazy night on the town; the hypnotic, beep-heavy “Kiss & Tell” , that’s a sort of Katy Perry-twanged “girl power” anthem to cheating boyfriends; and the yelling, horn-laced, clap-filled “Backstabber” which is Ke$ha’s bratty take on friends that suck.
Seemingly, this entire album is mostly aimed at up-tempo dance, and more of these club-attempts were less effective.  A major sore-thumb was the ode to pervy older men trying to pick up younger girls, “Dinosaur”, filled with its off-pitch whistles, chopped vocal effects, and cartoony delivery; feeling more like an annoyingly childish Kidz Bop attempt at “Hollaback Girl”.  “Boots and Boys” is a strange-accented, half-hearted girl version of Flo-Rida’s “Low”, making it less catchy and more corny.  An ultimate low shows up on the song “Party At a Rich Dude’s House”.  While being energetic and having catchy rock-infused production, lyrically it is all over the place and just plain obnoxious, with lyrics such as: “Cigar in the caviar/Pissing in the Dom Pérignon…”, “The sun is coming up, and oh my god, I think I’m still drunk”, and “I threw up in the closet, but I don’t care”.  A couple other missteps are: the bouncy, auto-tune heavy, “Your Love Is My Drug”, which while lyrically clever, has below average production, gets repetitive quickly, and has a cheap Spice Girls meets Lady Gaga feel to it; while the slower, light-hearted, ballad “Stephen” suffers from amateurish vocal chops, too much auto-tune, and its overall robotic sound.
What else can I say: Ke$ha has a potty mouth, drugged-up image, likes to go wild, is an all-around trouble maker, who appears to be the life of the party.  Her being promoted as anti-Taylor Swift/Katy Perry, definitely supplies a new rude-girl sound that is a temporary fresh dirty ying to the good girls’ yang.  She’s perfected a gimmick of striking back at the same sexism and crude lyrics that men have used against women for decades now, and I can see why the over-energetic rebellious teenage girls of America are eating this up.  It also helps that her main production contributor, Dr. Luke, shines most on this album by supplying a vast poppy, hypnotizing, dance soundtrack.  While being more catchy than I expected, my problem is that Ke$ha’s overboard lyrics, slutty innuendos, and lack of self-control on nearly every song is putting across the wrong message and isn’t something that I can see the 21-and-older crowd relating to much.  Her failure to mix things up, stray from the bratty attitude, and the heavy reliance on auto-tune (used on 11 of the 14 songs), shows me little risk, appears too formulistic, and tends to get repetitive quick.  Hopefully in the future with her new-found fame, she’ll find some time to experiment a little more, bring some depth next time, and possibly calm down a bit; but to me, ANIMAL is an average debut.  While she respectively will be controlling commercial radio for the next few months, I doubt that her CD will have a lot of replay value in my stereo.
